Almaty surprises almost everyone who visits. Tucked against the dramatic backdrop of the snow-capped Tian Shan mountain range in southern Kazakhstan, this is a city of elegant tree-lined boulevards, lively bazaars, excellent restaurants, and some of the most accessible mountain scenery on earth. It is cultured, cosmopolitan, and completely unforgettable.

As Kazakhstan’s largest city and its cultural heartbeat, Almaty offers a travel experience that is hard to find anywhere else: a place where Central Asian tradition, Soviet history, and 21st-century energy meet in a surprisingly sophisticated package. This guide is put together by the Vostok team — we are based in Kazakhstan, and Almaty is our home city.

Getting to Know Almaty

With a population of around two million people, Almaty sits at an elevation of 600–1,600 metres above sea level. The city spreads north to south, with the mountains to the south getting closer and more imposing the higher up the city you travel. The city enjoys four distinct seasons — warm summers perfect for hiking, snowy winters with world-class skiing, and spectacular spring and autumn colours in the mountain forests.

Top Things to Do in Almaty

Explore the Green Bazaar (Zelyony Bazar)

No trip to Almaty is complete without a visit to the Green Bazaar, one of the most vibrant traditional markets in Central Asia. This is where locals come to shop for everything from dried apricots and walnuts to horsemeat sausages (kazy), smoked fish, handmade cheeses, and mountains of spices. The noise, colour, and aromas are intoxicating. Arrive hungry and plan to sample as you walk.

Ride the Cable Car to Kok-Tobe

The Kok-Tobe hill, topped with its distinctive TV tower, is one of Almaty’s most beloved landmarks. A cable car runs from the city centre to the summit, where you will find panoramic views of the entire city, the mountains behind it, and the steppe stretching north to the horizon. There is a small amusement park, restaurants, and on weekends, live music and a lively local crowd.

💡 Pro Tip: Visit at sunset for the most spectacular views. The mountains glow golden just before dusk — one of the most photographed moments in all of Kazakhstan.

Visit Medeu — the World’s Highest Skating Rink

Sitting at 1,691 metres above sea level, Medeu is the highest-altitude skating rink in the world and one of Almaty’s most iconic sights. Even outside skating season, the dramatic dam and mountain valley setting make the drive up worthwhile. The rink is also the starting point for the road up to Shymbulak Ski Resort.

Walk Through Panfilov Park & Zenkov Cathedral

Named after the 28 heroes of the Panfilov Division in World War II, this beautiful park is home to one of Almaty’s architectural gems: the Zenkov Cathedral. Built entirely from wood in 1907 without a single nail, the Cathedral is painted in vivid rainbow colours and is one of the most photographed buildings in Kazakhstan. The park itself is a lovely place to stroll, especially on summer evenings when families gather and musicians play.

Day Trip to Charyn Canyon

Less than a three-hour drive from Almaty, Charyn Canyon is a must for any visitor. The canyon’s dramatic rust-red rock formations stretch for 150 kilometres, with the Valley of Castles offering a 3-kilometre walking trail through formations that reach up to 300 metres in height. Vostok operates daily departures from Almaty, often combined with a stop at Kolsai Lakes for a full day of natural wonder.

Discover the Central State Museum

To understand Kazakhstan’s astonishing 5,000-year history — from the ancient Saka warrior tribes to the Silk Road to the Soviet era — spend an afternoon in the Central State Museum. The ‘Golden Man’ exhibit (a reconstruction of a Saka warrior buried in over 4,000 gold ornaments) is genuinely breathtaking and alone worth the visit.
