CHARYN CANYON EXPERIENCE

Discover Charyn Canyon in southeastern Kazakhstan a spectacular landscape shaped over millions of years by water, wind and erosion. Hike through its dramatic valleys, explore the Valley of Castles and experience the geology and natural beauty of one of Kazakhstan’s most remarkable destinations.

Twelve Million Years

The canyon was carved by the Charyn River through layers of sedimentary rock laid down in the Paleogene period. Each stratum in the walls marks a distinct climatic era.

Two Hundred Metres Deep

The gorge runs 154 kilometres along the river, reaching depths of 300 metres at its most dramatic. The Valley of Castles forms its most celebrated section.

Colours by Hour

The sandstone shifts from pale rose at dawn through deep ochre at midday to burnt red at dusk. Photographers return at different hours for entirely different images.

Outlived the Ice Age

At the canyon's end grows a relict grove of Sogdian ash, a species that has survived here since before the last glaciation. Fewer than a dozen such groves remain on earth. This is the largest and best preserved.

Three Hours East

The canyon lies 200 kilometres east of the city, near the Chinese border. The drive crosses the steppe with the Tien Shan mountains to the south. It can be done in a day, though staying overnight is the better choice.
